I Thought Bal d’Afrique Was Untouchable Until I Wore Hanuman
There are fragrances you admire, and then there are the ones that quietly become part of your identity. For me, Byredo Bal d’Afrique has always belonged to that second category.
It was never the loudest perfume in the room. It never tried too hard. That was exactly the point. Bal d’Afrique had this effortless confidence that made people notice without understanding why. It smelled bright, clean, elegant, slightly unusual, and incredibly easy to wear.
Then I tried Boadicea the Victorious Hanuman.
The resemblance is immediate. Hanuman clearly lives in the same fragrance universe. But after wearing them side by side, I stopped thinking of it as a simple alternative. It feels more like someone took the idea behind Bal d’Afrique, dressed it in something more luxurious, added more flowers, increased the projection, and sent it back into the room with much more confidence.
So which one is actually better?
That question turned out to be harder than I expected.
The Similarity Is Impossible to Ignore
Both fragrances speak the same language.
They are bright, floral, woody, slightly fruity, and polished. Neither smells heavy or aggressively sweet. Both have that modern niche freshness where citrus and florals feel smooth rather than obvious.
Bal d’Afrique deserves credit for establishing this character first.
Its opening combines black currant, Amalfi lemon, bergamot, marigold, and orange blossom. The effect is sunny without becoming sharp. There is freshness, but also softness. The fruit never feels juicy in an obvious way. Everything blends into a smooth cloud.
Hanuman immediately reminds me of that structure, but it feels brighter at the edges. The citrus is more tart, the bergamot seems more noticeable, and the opening has a richer texture.
Bal d’Afrique Feels Effortless
This is where Bal d’Afrique still has a special advantage.
It never feels like it is performing for you.
The fragrance simply settles into its rhythm and becomes incredibly easy to live with. I can imagine wearing it to brunch, dinner, a date, the office, a weekend walk, or an evening event without thinking twice.
Some expensive fragrances demand the right outfit, season, and occasion. Bal d’Afrique does not.
It just works.
Hanuman Turns Up the Luxury
Hanuman is not as quiet.
Its personality feels more decorated, more expressive, and more obviously luxurious.
Bal d’Afrique moves into jasmine, cyclamen, and violet. The cyclamen creates a cool watery freshness that can almost suggest cucumber or melon. Jasmine keeps the fragrance soft and airy, while violet adds a slightly sharper floral accent.
It feels modern and clean.
Hanuman goes further.
Neroli, osmanthus, and magnolia give the floral heart more volume and detail. There is still that familiar fresh character underneath, but the flowers feel fuller and more expensive.
The Floral Heart Changes Everything
This is probably the stage where Hanuman earns most of its identity.
If you smell both fragrances quickly, you may think they are almost interchangeable. Wear them properly and the floral development tells a different story.
Bal d’Afrique stays smooth.
Hanuman expands.
There is more movement, more presence, and more of that dramatic luxury fragrance feeling. It does not abandon the original idea, but it makes the journey more elaborate.
That is why Hanuman also feels more formal. Bal d’Afrique can disappear naturally into your day. Hanuman wants to become part of the occasion.
The Dry Down Brings Them Close Again
Later in the wear, the two fragrances move toward familiar territory.
Vetiver, cedar, amber, and musk create the soft woody foundation that makes this profile so addictive.
The brightness of Bal d’Afrique becomes smoother, the florals lose some of their sharpness, and the fragrance settles into a warm, clean, slightly woody skin scent.
It feels intimate rather than weak.
Hanuman reaches a very similar place, although sandalwood gives the base more creaminess and weight.
The similarity becomes particularly noticeable after several hours. If you enjoy the dry down of Bal d’Afrique, there is a very good chance you will enjoy Hanuman too.
Performance Is Where Hanuman Wins
Bal d’Afrique has never been the fragrance I reach for when I want maximum projection.
That is part of its personality.
It lingers, moves around you, and creates small moments where someone nearby suddenly notices your scent. I actually like that. There is something attractive about a perfume that makes people come closer instead of announcing itself across the room.
Hanuman behaves differently.
It projects with much more confidence and leaves a stronger trail. The fragrance feels denser and more noticeable, especially during the earlier stages.
If your biggest complaint about Bal d’Afrique has always been its quiet performance, Hanuman may feel like the answer you wanted.
But stronger is not automatically better.
Sometimes I want restrained elegance. Sometimes I want more impact.
Which One Would I Actually Buy?
This is where price becomes impossible to ignore.
Bal d’Afrique is already positioned as a luxury fragrance, but Hanuman enters another level entirely. Once a perfume moves beyond the thousand dollar range, the question is no longer just whether it smells good.
It has to justify obsession.
Hanuman gives you more projection, a richer floral heart, extra creaminess, and a more dramatic experience. Those differences are real.
But it is not a completely different fragrance idea.
You are paying a very large premium for refinement, strength, and embellishment.
Choose Bal d’Afrique If You Want Ease
I would choose Bal d’Afrique for everyday life.
It is easier to wear, easier to recommend, and easier to justify. It has personality without becoming demanding. It can feel casual or elegant depending on the situation, and its quieter projection is part of what makes it charming.
For someone discovering this scent profile for the first time, Bal d’Afrique is still where I would start.
Choose Hanuman If You Want Presence
Hanuman makes more sense for someone who already understands the appeal of Bal d’Afrique but wants more.
More florals. More projection. More richness. More luxury.
It feels like the version you wear when you want the scent to become part of your entrance.
Final Verdict: My Heart Still Leans One Way
After wearing both, I understand why Hanuman attracts so much attention.
It takes a beautiful idea and makes it grander. The richer floral heart is gorgeous, the projection is satisfying, and the entire fragrance feels expensive in a very obvious way.
But if I had to keep only one, I would still choose Bal d’Afrique.
Not because Hanuman is worse.
Because Bal d’Afrique knows exactly when to stop.
It gives me brightness, flowers, soft woods, musk, and warmth without making the composition feel overloaded. It fits into more situations, feels more natural in everyday life, and still has enough character to make me want to smell my wrist again hours later.
Hanuman is the more impressive fragrance.
Bal d’Afrique is the one I would actually miss.
And sometimes that is the difference that matters most.
